Kids' bikes

Kids bikes are a great way to introduce children to the fun of cycling. They will help them develop balance, co-ordination and confidence. But how do you choose the best bike for your child? Here are some tips to help you make the right decision.

Types of children's bicycles:

Tricycles.

The age category is from 1 to 4 years old.

Tricycles are designed for the youngest. They are very stable, have a simple but sturdy construction.

Models for children from one year old are equipped with a handle for an accompanying adult, seat belts, a footrest, and a number of other accessories. Such transport is not designed for independent driving of a child, but mainly replaces a stroller on a walk. In the future, as the child grows up, it is possible to transform the bike: the parent handle is removed, seat belts and footrests are removed and the bike turns into an ordinary tricycle.

Advantages of tricycles:

  • The bike is stable due to the presence of three support points, which allows the child to feel confident
  • light weight of the bike
  • some models are equipped with useful accessories – bags, weather visors.

Disadvantages of tricycles:

  • The bike has a non-folding design, which can cause inconvenience during transportation.

Quadricycle.

The age group is from 4 to 7 years old.

These bikes are similar to ordinary two-wheeled bicycles, except that they have an extra pair of wheels on the rear axle. This pair of wheels acts as a safety feature and makes your child feel confident in learning to drive independently.

As the child improves in bike control, you can try to disconnect the safety pair of wheels.

Advantages of four-wheeled bicycles:

  • Having a second pair of wheels gives your child confidence and thus helps to speed up the learning process.
  • The ability to detach the auxiliary pair of wheels makes it possible to use one bike both for learning to drive and as a regular two-wheeled bike when the learning process is complete.

Disadvantages of four-wheeled bicycles:

  • The bike has a non-folding design, which can cause inconvenience during transportation.
  • The presence of a second pair of wheels adds weight to the overall weight of the bicycle, which often prevents the child from using it unaided.

Two-wheel bikes.

Designed for children who are confident in the art of two-wheeled transport. This type of children's bicycle is already structurally close to the adult type. Some models can be equipped with shifters.

Advantages of two-wheel bicycles:

  • Structurally closer to adult models, so they may have a shifting system, improved braking system (disc brakes), shock absorbers

Disadvantages of two-wheel bicycles:

  • Approaching adult models has the flip side of the coin, namely, the bike has the ability to accelerate to higher speeds, which requires a child to drive confidently.

Recommendations for choosing a children's bike:

When choosing, take into account the age of the child, his height and the diameter of the wheels:

  • 1-3 years old – height 75-95 cm – wheels up to 12 inches in diameter;
  • 3-4 years old – height 95-101 cm - wheels with a diameter of 12 inches;
  • 4-6 years old – height 101-115 cm - wheels measuring 14-16 inches;
  • 6-9 years old – height 115-128 cm - wheels with a diameter of 18-20 inches;
  • 9-13 years old – height 126-155 cm - wheels measuring 20-24 inches.
